Equadors Techtonic Plates

Ecuador is a country that is prone to many earthquakes and volcanos. As you can see by the map down below Ecuador sits on two prominent tectonic plates, the Nazca Plate and the South American plate.

Ecuador sits on one of the most active and major tectonic plates in the world. The South American plate is home to over 200 active volcanos, and part of the South American continent including Ecuador sits on the ring of fire.

Both the Nazca plate and the South American plate are bumping right into each other making the oceanic Nazca plate begin to slide underneath the South American plate. This effectively causes mass amounts of earthquakes along the west coast of South America.

Ecuador also is one of the countries that sits on the equator. Since the earth bulges at the equator it is more likely to have Earthquakes but the equator is not one of those countries. Ecuador residents recall very small earthquakes with a big ones happening about every 20 to 30 years.

  2. Hi Ania! I really enjoyed reading your blog post for this week. I think you did a great job explaining why Ecuador is more susceptible to earth quakes as well as which plates are involved.
