Ecuador
Ecuador is on the west coast of South America against the pacific ocean, a part of the country located on the equator. It has a population of about 17 million and covers an area of 109,483 million miles. Ecuador is bordered by both Columbia and Peru with its capital city being Quito. It is prone to natural disasters like earthquakes since it is on the equator, with the country having at least 88 of varying sizes in 2022.

There are also at least 20 active volcanos right now since Ecuador is placed within the ring of fire. The right of the fire is a path along the pacific ocean of active and very frequent volcanos.
While hazards, disasters, and catastrophes all sound very similar they all have separate meanings. A hazard is a typhoon, flood, or fire that has the potential to threaten people's lives. A disaster is when any flood, earthquake, or fire does impact a large population of people's lives or property. While a catastrophe is something that impacts an even larger population of people often leading to the need for military assistance.
We welcome Ecuador to class!
ReplyDeleteHi Ania! I wanted to comment on your post as my country, Peru, is just to the south and we share many of the same geographic conditions. Attached is the link for a short video on the tectonics and earthquakes of Peru and Chile that you might find interesting https://www.iris.edu/hq/inclass/animation/peruchile_subduction_zone_earthquakes__tectonics
ReplyDeleteBesides seismic activity both our countries share weather related events due to ENSO, or El Niño Southern Oscillation, which can cause dramatic shifts in weather patterns. If you haven't visited Ecuador I hope you get the chance as it is a beautiful country!
